The prayers recorded in the New Testament reveal the heart and soul of the apostolic witness. We pray what we believe. We pray what we desire. We pray what we love. The apostles loved the Cross and the Parousia. The apostolic prayers instill within us that which holds ultimate and eternal significance. They inspire holy ambition. And they spur us on to take up our cross and wait for his Son from heaven. So Paul declared, “Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that Day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing” (2 Tim 4:8).
